The Department of Pathology offers autopsy consultation to any faculty or house staff physician of the University of Mississippi Medical Center after authorization for a postmortem examination is obtained from the next of kin of the deceased. There is no charge to the families for such service.
Expert consultation is available from our various subspecialty pathologists in the UMMC Department of Pathology. Toxicology testing can also be performed in cases where indicated.
Autopsies can be customized to meet the personal and/or religious needs of families.
Private autopsy and coroner requests
The department also offers postmortem examination on deceased persons who were not under the care of UMMC faculty. Such autopsies are performed with the authorization of the next of kin. The cost of autopsy services varies based on the extent of the examination. Fee schedules may be obtained by contacting the morgue office in the Department of Pathology at (601) 984-1890.
The Division of Autopsy Pathology faculty within the Department of Pathology also performs medical autopsies on cases that fall under the jurisdiction of county coroners. Coroners may contact the department for autopsy requests.
